history of rock music

It originated from the United States in the 1950s and became a global genre by the 90s. Besides the steady beat, we know rock music for its undertone of the blues sound. That’s because the music of pioneer artistes had similar structures as classic blues music. Hence, people suggest that the African-American rhythm and blues has a certain level of influence on it.

After a decade, things began to change with the music of the Rolling Stones becoming popular. Rock music veered away from the original themes as they introduced juvenile defiance and sex into their music. That and some other things resulted in increased circulation of the genre. In the 70s, bands like Led Zeppelin adopted a heavier and more sonic sound.

Around that time, other groups deepened the concept and produced singular-themed albums, creating progressive rock. With time, the trend continued and produced punk and alternative rock. Therefore, some people describe rock as restless because the characteristics are always changing.

Sub-genres of Rock Music

Rock music has been evolving from its inception, and over time, this produced many sub-genres. There are over forty of them, but some are more known than others. They include Afro-punk, Alternative rock, Blues-rock, Gothic metal, Hard rock, Metal core, Progressive metal, Southern rock, and Surf. They embrace various musical styles with rock music as the foundation.
